Premier League: Man UTD vs Newcastle 4-1

In the Premier League, Manchester United return to winning ways when Anthony Martial scored twice in a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United side at Old Trafford.

Having lost 2-0 to then-bottom Watford last time out, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side seemed to have suffered a Christmas hangover when they fell behind Matty Longstaff’s 17th-minute opener on Boxing Day.

Manchester United’s defense had been given an early reprimand when Dwight Gayle scrupulously blazed over as clean as he was, but Longstaff– the only goal scorer back in early October– made them pay, catching Joelinton’s layoffs before angling a low shot beyond David de Gea.

Nonetheless, any hope that Steve Bruce might have harboured to complete a league double over his former club had gone halfway.

Martial pulled home side level when his first low shot from Andreas Pereira’s cushioned pass crawled into the nearby post, the ball slipping through Martin Dubravka to hit the net.

Newcastle then gave the hosts a second, their attempts to play their way out of trouble only to see Fabian Schar playing a pass right across his own penalty area to Mason Greenwood, who let loose a thumping left-footed drive that flashed past Dubravka with a slight deflection.

Marcus Rashford climbed over Schar to head home to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s tempting cross and make it 3-1 at intervals, while Martial added a fourth one-on- one chance early in the second half.

The Frenchman was once again the beneficiary of a visitor’s gift, clearly shown by Sean Longstaff’s under-hit back pass. Denied a hat-trick by a letter, he was taken away with a packed list of festive fixtures in mind.

Paul Pogba started his return from injury by playing the whole second half of what had become a debacle, with an emphatic outcome that took Manchester United to the seventh place in the table, just four points behind Chelsea.
