Dear KFBers, we have got loads of interesting stories in tonight’s #MajorHeadlinesYouMissedToday feature…enjoy!

Nigeria ranked 64th in latest FIFA ranking, placed 14th in Africa

The Nigerian national football team has been elevated by three spots in the latest ranking released by world football governing body, FIFA.

The team is now 64th in the world in the September ranking by Federation of International Football Associations, FIFA, on Thursday.
In August, the national team was placed 67th in the word and 16th in Africa.
However, the ranking table on FIFA’s website show that the Super Eagles earned points as against 513 it had in August. The latest ranking now puts Nigeria in the 14th position in Africa.
Relatively, Argentina and Belgium remain first and second place, respectively.
Among the top five are Germany, Colombia and Brazil.

Economy made me wrap and dump my day-old baby – Arrested woman
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr Fatai Owoseni, on Thursday said the Police had arrested a 31-year-old woman who allegedly abandoned her day-old-baby on the street.
Owoseni, who gave the suspect’s name as Ifunayan Eme, an indigene of Enugu State, said she was arrested on Tuesday during the Eid-el-Kabir holiday.

He said the woman allegedly gave birth to the baby girl at No. 1, Prince Bello Street, Ajagbandi in Ojo Local Development Area Council of the state.

The police chief said the suspect allegedly wrapped the baby and dumped it on the street, adding that the police was able to trace her after investigation.

“The baby is now in the Police Cottage Hospital located at Ikeja Police College for proper care.

“We are trying to reach A government agency that would rehabilitate the woman,’’ he said.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the suspect claimed she abandoned the baby because of hardships.

Eme, who claimed to be married with three children before, stressed that she had separated from her husband, but got pregnant for another man who denied responsibility.

She, however, claimed that she abandoned the baby at the gate of her residence after giving birth to her at about 1 a.m., alleging that her neighbours alerted the police.

“After I gave birth to the baby in the public toilet in our house, I wrapped the baby with a bag and dropped her outside our gate and went inside to sleep.

“I never thought of checking my baby again. I just wanted someone to find her and take her nothing more,’’ she said. (NAN)

Buhari not slow in running the country, he follows only rule of law – VON DG, Okechukwu

The Director General of Voice of Nigeria, VON, Osita Okechukwu, has noted that President Muhammadu Buhari is not slow in his quest to transform the country but only following the rule of law.
The VON boss was speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Thursday where he insisted that the President was trying to follow the rule of the law to drive his administration.
The DG, while explaining the motive behind the recently launched national orientation programme, ‘Change Begins With Me’, said, “If you have to follow the rule, it will be as if you are slow.
“President Muhammadu Buhari is not slow, (but) it is about following the rule of the law.
“We are saying in the fullness of time, the Nigerian people will come to realise what we are doing because transparency is on the door step.”
Okechukwu further pointed out that Buhari was not partial in his war against corruption, calling on Nigerians to support the campaign.
He added, “The corruption fight is not one sided. Nobody could have probed Osita Okechukwu in Voice Of Nigeria, but you can now probe me.

“We are saying in the next few years, the money we’ll save will make better result than the big money we got in the past and wasted.

“We are saying please, we need citizens’ participation because if the citizens are not involved, we are wasting our time.”

10m Nigerians at risk of diabetes by 2026 – Endocrinologist
No fewer than 10 million Nigerians are at risk of suffering from diabetes ‘type 2’ by 2026, according to an Endocrinologist, Prof. Feyi Adegoke. Adegoke, who is the President of Endocrine and Metabolism Society of Nigeria, EMSON, disclosed this in Calabar, Cross River State, during the 38th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting of the society.
According to her, no fewer than five million Nigerians are currently suffering from the disease, adding that one out of every 10 adult in Nigeria has ‘type 2’ diabetes. Speaking further, she said that over 15 million people in Africa were currently suffering from the disease hence the need for a lot of awareness in order to checkmate the disease. She said: “Currently in Nigeria, no fewer than five million people are suffering from diabetes type 2. This number will increase to about 10 million in the next 10 years.
Currently in Africa, there are about 15 million people suffering from diabetes and by the year 2025, that number will double to about 30 million. “In Nigeria, residents in the urban centres are more at risk of diabetes than those in the rural areas.
The metropolitan cities have the highest rate of diabetes and that is because people are tending more towards Western lifestyle of consuming more alcoholic drinks, smoking, consumption of fast foods and others.
These are some of the things that drive the epidemic we are seeing.’’ She decried the tendency of people doing less of physical activities now, saying that it was the reason the epidemic of diabetes and obesity were on the increase. She advised people to always do physical exercises, reduce the intake of canned drinks, stop smoking and eat balanced diets rather than fast foods.

Ibori’s conviction stands despite bribery evidence –UK court

The conviction of a former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, for fraud and money laundering remained valid despite evidence that a British police officer took bribes during the investigation of his case, Reuters quoted Britain’s state prosecution agency to have said this on Thursday.

Ibori, who served as the governor of Delta State between 1999 and 2007, is currently serving a 13-year jail term in a British prison after pleading guilty in 2012 to 10 counts of fraud and money laundering.

But the case has become an embarrassment for Britain since one of Ibori’s associates, convicted money-launderer Bhadresh Gohil, alleged that the judicial process was tainted because prosecutors had covered up evidence of police corruption.

Authorities initially denied everything and charged Gohil with perverting the course of justice, but that prosecution was abruptly dropped in January.

In May, the Crown Prosecution Service said it had found “material (evidence) to support the assertion that a police officer received payment in return for information.”

After an internal review of the case lasting months, the CPS said on Thursday that while the material “should have been disclosed to the defence,” that did not call into question the validity of the convictions of Ibori, Gohil and others.

Ibori’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Gohil’s lawyer said he could not comment for legal reasons.

Court proceedings on the confiscation of Ibori’s assets are still dragging through the courts, and lawyers for Ibori and Gohil could use the next court hearing to challenge the findings of the CPS review.

Ibori first came to the attention of British police in 1991, when he was working as a cashier at Wickes, a home improvement chainstore in London, and was caught stealing from the till.

After returning to Nigeria, he became involved in politics. As governor of Delta State, he amassed a huge fortune and became a power-broker in the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party the country.

The charges to which Ibori pleaded guilty amounted to the theft of about $80m. Prosecutors said that was only part of his total booty, which was kept hidden via a complex web of shell companies, offshore accounts and front men.

During his sentencing in 2012, the court heard that he had enjoyed a lavish lifestyle involving foreign properties and a fleet of luxury cars. At the time of his arrest, he had been trying to buy a $20m private jet.

Your calls for Buhari’s resignation is silly- APC tells PDP

APC has described as silly the calls by PDP for President Buhari to return the economic to the way it was before he assumed office in 2015 and then resign. APC reacted via a statement signed by its National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni. Read below…

The attention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is drawn to the latest ridiculous demand by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari return the country to the the voodoo economics and reckless fiscal policies the country was subjected to during the immediate-past PDP administration.
Also, PDP’s silly call for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari is not worth the ink it is written with. Hence the APC will not dissipate energy responding. The PDP faction by its demand to return the country to the years where looting of the public treasury was the order of the day, has taken its orchestrated plot to deflect attention from the economic mess it left behind to new insensitive and shameless heights. Instead of this charade by the PDP, we advise the PDP and their cronies to apologise to Nigerians and toe the path of honour by returning public funds stolen under its watch. While the PDP attempts to fraudulently re-write history and misrepresent facts on its misrule of the country, Nigerians are traumatised on a daily basis on disclosures of the startling level of pillage of the country’s commonwealth perpetuated under its watch. Instead of saving for the rainy day, past PDP administrations and their cronies literally looted the public treasury blind, using the loot to build luxury hotels and other properties, stashing loot in farmlands and hidden bank accounts. While the APC led administration is open to and welcomes positive and constructive contributions on resolving the country’s economic challenges, the Party assures Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is already employing all legitimate and innovative means to restore the country’s battered economy back to health in the quickest possible time. The results of the fiscal and economic agendas embarked by the President Buhari administration to tackle the effects of the country’s diminishing crude oil revenues, falling value of the Naira and resuscitate the economy will be evident soon. The APC appeals for patience and cooperation from Nigerians as the President Muhammadu Buhari administration works assiduously to pull the country out of the present hardships and restore the country on the path growth in all facets.Signed: Hon. Mai Mala Buni
National Secretary
