My lagos Diaries: The Fairytale Story of Blessing

The birth of a child is often seen as a blessing, but when the mother is a teenage victim of forced prostitution, it may not be seen that way. For many in Akala; a suburb in Mushin Lagos, their only option seemed to be a life of drugs or child prostitution. My Lagos Diaries found Blessing whose story turned out to be a modern day fairytale. Freedom Foundation in collaboration with God Bless Nigeria initially encountered Blessing as a bright 17-year old whose dream of going back to school was never overshadowed by the circumstances in Akala. Once she was taken out of Akala, Blessing was soon back in secondary school with more dreams of going to university. Freedom Foundation exposed her to vocational training which set her in the right direction. She shared her eye-witness accounts of innocent people who lost their lives during gang wars and police raids. Through it all, she was determined to forge ahead. A few years after being taken off the streets, Blessing was swept off her feet by her own ‘Prince Charming’. Who says fairytales are long gone? Through My Lagos Diaries, Freedom Foundation goes where no one else will because everyone deserves a chance to be happy and ‘live happily ever after’.
